DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE

LUMBAR SPINE DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE a.k.a. DDD

Degenerative-Disc

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a condition where the natural degeneration of intervertebral discs causes back pain. DDD is not actually a disease, but often a normal condition of aging. Most people are only at risk as they get older. Athletes, on the other hand, can potentially develop DDD earlier in life. In some cases it’s caused by damage created from a twisting injury to the lower back. We’ve also seen clients develop DDD from the general overuse and early wear and tear that comes from rigorous training over many years.

DDD is painful and problematic because it reduces the padding within the spine. The spine is made up of vertebrae which are padded with intervertebral discs. These discs serve as shock absorbers and allow for smoother, easier movement within the spine. Over time, some discs lose some of their hydration and height, which causes pain. Not all people will experience DDD as they age, and not all of those who do will show symptoms.

Since DDD can be caused by an injury to the spine, or by excessive overuse in sports, we think it’s important for our clients to know about this condition. We have seen some of our athletes develop DDD, so we always take it into consideration when diagnosing back pain. With the right treatment plan, we can strengthen the support around the spine and gradually increase performance level for those dealing with DDD.

DDD usually presents with lower back pain that gets worse when sitting for long periods of time, or bending or rotating the spine. Symptoms appear to improve when the patient is active or lying down. When diagnosing DDD, we may need to run some tests, like a CT scan or an X-ray. We’ll also, as always, take a look at the patient history.

If we find that you are dealing with DDD, we will create a recovery plan that will help you manage the condition through exercise, physiotherapy, and possible lifestyle changes. Our clinic is equipped with tools like NMES that can help treat the pain enough to help you feel up to the challenge of physical activities and strengthening exercises. Core stability, for instance, can be really helpful in providing additional support for the back.

Unfortunately, DDD is not something you can reverse, but we can help you learn to manage it for the long term. We are movement specialists, committed to teaching our clients the healthiest, safest ways to enjoy the activities they love, and that’s exactly how we address this condition.

I had been diagnosed with degenerative lower back issues. The doctors solutions were no more running and pain medications as needed. I really wasn’t comfortable with either suggestion and felt there just had to be other options. Not only is my back stronger but I have been given the tools not only to decrease my pain but also allow me to continue running. I cannot stress enough what a difference this has made not only in my back but my overall health and mental well-being. I have surpassed some of my personal goals of 20 miles in a week, no pain medications and weight loss with ZERO PAIN!!!! I cannot thank the MOTUS Team enough. I’m not a professional athlete or really even a fitness fanatic. I’m a 56 year old wife, mother and grandmother who can say I’m in the best shape of my life. I encourage you to check them out whether you are an athlete on the mend, dealing with an injury or diagnosis that you are being told will alter your life or just a mom/grandma looking to improve your way of life. I cannot recommend MOTUS enough!!!
